Wooden Overcoats all set for Season Two

Thursday, 15 September 2016 09:42

Have you heard of Wooden Overcoats?

No? Well let me tell you about it....It all started when 2011 DSL graduate Felix Trench and friend Tom Crowley came up with the idea for a short film while on the Jubilee Bridge in London in 2014. Their idea was to play two competing funeral directors in a short, silent slapstick, but it wasn't till months later that it developed into a possible sitcom. They floated the idea with comedy genius David K. Barnes who developed some of the major charactors as well as the first episode and the setting for Piffling Island was born. Radio producers Andy Goddard and John Wakefield soon joined the team, followed by 25 actors, 11 musicians and 9 crew members. That little idea on Jubilee Bridge had developed into something really quite exciting.

Wooden Overcoats is an audio podcast sitcom set on the overlooked Channel Island of Piffling, where obstinate undertaker Rudyard Funn runs his family’s failing funeral parlour. But when new and sexy undertaker Eric Chapman sets up shop across the square and becomes an immediate sensation, Rudyard realises he’ll have to take drastic steps to stay in business. With his frustrated sister Antigone, dogsbody Georgie, and a mouse called Madeleine, will Rudyard ever defeat his charming rival?

The sitcom is not only written by the UK's best new comic writers, it also boasts an original orchestral score. The music is written by James Whittle and features guitars, mandolin, drums, cello, violin, a piano and a concert organ!

The actors include DSL graduates Felix Trench, Beth Eyre, Pip Gladwin, Max Tyler, Sarah Burton, Ella Garland and Alana Ross as well as Belinda Lang, Andy Secombe, Clara Baxendale, Andy Hamilton and Julia Deakin.

Series One of Wooden Overcoats was recorded over four days in 2015 and then, after raising £10,000 on kickstarter, Season Two is being recorded...probably as I type!

Wooden Overcoats has received rave reviews from The Times, The Observer, The Huffington Post, The Daily Telegraph and many more. It won iTunes Best of 2015 and has recently been nomiated for the Prix Europa 2016 - the second biggest prize in radio - and is up against the BBC, RTE and many other European National Broadcasters. The award will be presented in Berlin in late October 2016.
