I started my professional actor training at DSL summer school in 2019. While researching providers, I was excited to see their full-time course options, as well as the opportunity to attain a Trinity Level 5 Diploma which would give me access to a degree course at Middlesex University. My seed of an idea came to fruition; Summer School in 2019, followed by the One Year Acting Diploma and Trinity Level 5 Diploma and then I started my degree in January 2021.
To attain the Trinity Diploma, we were required to keep notes of classes and to reflect on scene studies completed during the One Year Actor course. This was to note progression and identify areas of our practice that needed more focus. Often these were in line with areas raised by tutors, but it also benefitted my practice when I disagreed with some comments! It was not a massive additional workload and for me was a very valuable achievement.
In May I completed the first module of the BA in Professional Practice (Arts & Creative Industries) with Middlesex University. This asked us to reflect on our professional practice, to compare and discuss how it sits alongside or in contrast to theories or research in that field. Students networked together and supported each other, sharing thoughts and reflections through Blogs as well as tutor led meetings online. It was a steep learning curve for me after some time out of academic education, but with an open mind and plenty of reading, I achieved a 2:1 for the first module, a great confidence boost to go into the next module in September.
